What is CAEL?
The Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Test is a standardized test designed to measure the English language proficiency of students planning to study in Canadian post-secondary institutions. It is an alternative to the American TOEFL test and the British IELTS Academic Test.
CAEL is one of the best tools for identifying students with the right English skills for academic success. It provides an authentic representation of language use in a Canadian academic context. Test takers read articles, listen to a lecture, answer questions, and write a short essay, as they would be expected to do in a first-year Canadian university or college classroom.
CAEL is now available as a computerized test, known as CAEL CE. CAEL CE has been improved from the previous written version to deliver all four components (reading, listening, writing, and speaking) by computer in a single test sitting.
Why Take CAEL?
CAEL represents language use in an academic context, and CAEL test takers are able to demonstrate their language skills with this integrated test.
CAEL Online can be safely taken from home and is overseen by a secure, online proctoring solution through Examity. CAEL Online includes the same test format, content, and reporting scale as the CAEL Test that is delivered in our test centres.

Who Accepts CAEL Tests
CAEL is officially accepted by professional organizations, colleges, universities, and employers as proof of English language proficiency.
Please note that scores for the CAEL taken at a Test Centre or Online are used the same way and that the test format, test content, scoring criteria, and rating scale, are exactly the same. While we will send CAEL scores for either delivery method to the institutions you select, we encourage you to confirm that your institution accepts or will accept CAEL Online scores.
